Chapter 7 - Fishing

Day 7 - (rolled cutest baby contest!)

Kaitlin and the boys had settled into a routine and things were so much easier than in the junkyard. Kaitlin wanted to kiss Reid, but the thought had her all confused so she put it out of her mind and went to work or to 'get as much as you can without getting stung'. That was her new goal. No bee stings today.

While Kaitlin was at work, Reese entered Maddy in the "Cutest Baby in Twinbrook" contest. All you had to do was submit a two pictures of your little one - a body shot and a head shot. Reese got busy with phone and started snapping pictures then uploaded them.

Who could say no to that face! Of course Reese already knew she was the cutest kid of all and was a shoo-in to win. A week later Reese got the email. She had placed 2nd and won $150. He was pumped. If he couldn't get a job, then at least this would help. He proudly presented the check to his mother. He liked the firemen and the fire station was cool, but he really wanted to have his own room. A place where he could invite friends - what friends, Jade was his only friend - invite Jade over. He was pleased to give his mother $150 to go into their apartment fund. See, even Maddy could contribute he told her.

Kaitlin couldn't believe they had already been in Twinbrook for almost 3 months. It would be fall soon so she decided to take up the offer of one of the firemen to borrow their tackle box and take the boys and Maddy to the beach and let them fish and swim if they wanted.

They grabbed the tackle box and headed out. When they arrived, Kaitlin carried Maddy while Ben and Reese took off running for the water. She knew then that this had been a very good idea.

There were mostly older people there. Kaitlin was kind of hoping for some kids for her boys to bond with, especially Ben. Reese had been talking to Jade but neither boy had made any other friends their own age. Maybe once they can go to school, she thought. But neither boy seemed to notice once they got their fishing poles in the water.

Once she was satisfied the boys were okay she took Maddy to the beach and they made sand castles in the sand. Unfortunately the fish weren't biting or they just didn't have the right bait because they came up empty handed. They still had fun trying.

the boys were starving after fishing and Kaitlin made them hot dogs. Somehow they tasted pretty good. Maybe it was being outdoors by the beach that made them taste better or they were just really hungry. After finishing his dog, Ben laid down and turned on the stereo and took a nap.

Not wanting everyone to get sunburned, after she cleaned up, Kaitlin loaded up Maddy and they took off for the fire station. The left tanned, exhausted and happy.

Ben asked for a bedtime story - from Reese. When Kaitlin walked in to go to bed and saw them, it broke her heart in a million pieces. Reese, always the caregiver. But who cares for him? He knows Ben has issues with the move. He told her, but what did she do? Nothing. What could she do? She was trying as hard as she could, but her only source of income was harvesting honey for consignment and that won't pay the bills. They were fortunate to have a roof over their heads. Until she saved enough for a deposit and some furniture and then found a real job, they were stuck.

She counted her money and figured that she should be able to have enough to put down a deposit with enough leftover to buy some second hand furniture. Soon Reese. Just hang in there, she thought as she drifted off to sleep.

    1. Awww. He's a blessing for sure. Sadly he has had to grow up way too fast.

    2. Yes, he is a blessing. It's a little bit like Aurora in my story "Forever in Time." She had to be a rock for her father during his darkest hours and at a young age, and it shapes her life.
